Moving a Grandfather Clock Safely
Step-by-step preparation before your clock goes on a truck.
Never move it assembled
The pendulum, weights and movement must come out. A hanging pendulum in a moving truck will destroy the suspension spring and often the crutch.
Order of operations
Stop the pendulum, remove it, then remove the weights one at a time - label them left, center and right, because they are not interchangeable.
Secure the chains or cables
Tie chains together with a twist tie so they cannot come off the sprockets. On cable clocks, wedge foam under the pulleys.
Protect the movement
Remove the hood, wrap the movement in bubble wrap, and pack the glass panels separately. Photograph everything before disassembly.
Transport upright
Strap the case upright against the wall of the truck. Laying a case on its side stresses the joints and can crack the base.
