Chime and Strike Troubleshooting

Wrong hour, silent chime, or chiming at odd times - what each symptom means.

Strikes the wrong hour

On most clocks you can move the hour hand alone to match the number of strikes. If the hand is friction-fit, hold the arbor and rotate the hand gently.

Chimes at the wrong quarter

Let the clock chime through several sequences without touching it. Self-correcting movements resynchronize within an hour or two.

Chime plays but hammers do not strike

Hammer wires may be bent against the gong rods. They should sit about a hammer's width from the rod at rest.

Chime runs continuously

The warning wheel is not locking, usually from a worn lever or dry pivot. Stop the clock and call for service - running it will accelerate wear.

Weak or muffled tone

Gong rods loosen at the block. A tightened mounting block often restores full resonance.

Silent mode confusion

Many movements have a night silent lever. Confirm it is not engaged before assuming a fault.
