Clocks and Colorado's Dry Climate
Why Front Range humidity levels crack cases and how to protect yours.
Front Range humidity is brutal on wood
Denver-area indoor humidity routinely drops below 20 percent in winter. Antique cases built in humid climates shrink, and veneer lifts.
What to watch for
Hairline cracks in the case, loose glue joints, doors that no longer latch, and veneer bubbling near the base.
Aim for 35-45 percent
A modest room humidifier near - not touching - the clock keeps a case stable through winter.
Avoid heat sources
Never place a clock above a fireplace in active use or next to a forced-air vent. Cycling heat is worse than steady dryness.
Sunlight fades dials
UV bleaches painted dials and darkens finishes unevenly. Keep clocks off south-facing walls or use UV film.
Altitude and oil
Dry air also accelerates oil evaporation, which is why Colorado clocks often need service sooner than the textbook five-year interval.
